What is Documentary Wedding Photography?
Documentary photographs are captured with no posing guidance or rehearsal. The photographer captures your wedding day how you planned it. This is so your wedding photographs will tell the story of your wedding day.
Most people are not used to having a photographer follow them around all day and the thought of it can be a little scary. With documentary photography you don't have to be. You can enjoy your wedding day while the photographer captures it. No cheesy posing and awkward smiling required. The traditional family photos might require a little.
Documentary photography requires all the elements of photography carried out at the highest level. This includes great composition and understanding light. A documentary photograph truly captures a moment in time, telling the story and capturing the emotion of the people within the image. The skill of a documentary photographer it is about having the experience and knowing where to position yourself so that you can capture those illusive moments and emotions.
Every wedding is different as are the people involved. This needs to be captured in your wedding photographs. We all have different personalities and this is what you want to capture. If most of your photographs are posed then they will look staged and with no emotion. When you look back on your wedding photographs you want them to bring back the emotions of the day. Not the awkward posing suggested by the photographer.

Beautiful Wedding Images Taken in a Natural Unobtrusive StyleDocumentary Wedding Photography. The Best of Both Worlds
Before choosing a photographer for your wedding you have probably looked at hundreds if not thousands of wedding photographs from lots of different weddings and have some favourite images. With images that are posed you will see very similar images from the same photographer just with different people. Nothing wrong with that. You are guarenteed some nice posed images but just very similar to other couple's weddings.
When choosing a documentary photographer for your wedding you need to trust them. Look at their portfolio and if you like what you see and feel confident then you should be in good hands. They will approach the day capturing the important moments as they happen. That can't be planned. The images you receive will reflect your personality and that of your friends and family. A certain look, the way someone smiles or laughs. This can't be faked, posed or planned. A documentary photographer will capture this as they will be anticipating situations in order to get the best shot possible.

Your wedding day will be one of the most important days of your life with friends and family arriving from all over to celebrate it with you. While you have all day it can be busy. Always something going on. Everyone will want to congratulate you. You will see people you haven't seen in months or even years. This is what is important on your wedding day.
Yes of course you might want some portraits of your partner and yourself as well as some family and bridal party photos. When shooting a wedding I keep this to a short period of time and you also get the moments before or after that portrait was taken. Sometimes you get photobombed!!

Most people look their best when they are relaxed. On your wedding day you have spent months and years planning. On the day is the time to enjoy it. Having a camera pointed at you and being asked to pose this way or that way can be very stressful.
If I have one rule it would be I don't do stress.
I want every couple to be relaxed and in the moment. Your focus is on your wedding day and that's what I want to capture. Natural un-posed, un-orchestrated images of your wedding day.

During your wedding way there will be a whirlwind of events going on around you. You won't see most of it unfortunately. A documentary photographer will blend in with your guests and capture the moments you won't see. The proud parents, the mischievous child, the smiles and the odd tear from guests. This is all part of the story of your day that you will be able to look back on. All the little surprises you missed.

I have saved the best til last. The best photographs are when people are relaxed. Not posing and not aware the camera is on them. People's guards are down and that's when you can capture their true personality. The best photos I have taken are like this.
