Killashee House Hotel was a fabulous venue Caroline and Dave's Wedding. In the Hotel they can cater for very large weddings and smaller intimate ones like this one. Killashee Hotel is a renowned wedding venue with a beautiful setting. It is surrounded by wild woodland walks and blooming gardens which form the idyllic backdrop for an unforgettable day.

Caroline and Dave had their ceremony in a suite in the hotel conducted by their celebrant Rev Barbara Allen and moved to the Original House for their drinks reception and dinner. They had access to the beautiful Butterfly Gardens for photos. We were lucky as it was raining on and off all day but there was a break in the clouds and we ran out to get a few nice shots. We also had a chance to go into their Snug Bar for a quick pint and a few nice photos.

and Why Can it be SO Expensive?

How Much Does a Wedding Photographer Cost in Ireland?Everyone at a Wedding has a Camera. Why Bother Paying a Professional Wedding Photographer. They Can Be So Expensive!!

I hope you are all enjoying the few days of sun we are getting here in Ireland (mid July 2021) as I am at the moment. Normally July is frantic with weddings as it is possibly the most popular month for couples as you have the best chance of good weather, schools are off and people coming from abroad can combine a couples wedding into part of their summer holiday plans. 

So with a little extra time that I have compared to most July's I wanted to explain why wedding photography can be one of the more expensive items on a couples list when planning a wedding and how to pick a good one and get the best value for your money. From the outset I am obviously biased but I hope to give an impartial view of what a wedding photographer does which might help explain the cost and when picking a wedding photographer some guidance on how to avoid the cowboys. 

When a couple is planning a wedding they have the choice of getting a friend to do it or for all the guests to share their images with the couple and then they can pick the best or if they choose to hire a wedding photographer they will see they need a budget anywhere between €400 and €4000. Option 1: Friends and Family Doing the Photos at your Wedding

Why Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer?Do you need a professional Wedding Photographer? Maybe a Friend Can Do It!

Let's start with the family and friends option. You're thinking I am going to knock this but I'm not!. It is a perfectly valid option. We are in the middle of a pandemic and lots of people are hurting financially so budgets can be tight. Couples also sometimes want a small intimate wedding and the memory of the day is enough.

The difference between getting a professional and having a friend (Assuming they are not a pro wedding photographer....then you've struck gold) do the photography is this. The friend may have attended a lot of weddings as a guest but wouldn't have the experience of a professional. They will turn up and capture what is happening and will likely get some nice shots. They wouldn't know the pitfalls of what can go wrong. For Example in church weddings it is very important to speak to the priest and ask where they are comfortable for the photographer to go. I have had every answer from "Do what you need to do" to "Don't step past this point" and everything imbetween.  

After the ceremony is the time for Family Photos. I have yet to meet a family that doesn't have a good proportion of the guests roll their eyes at this point. They're having a drink and having fun and the dreaded photographer is now going to ruin their buzz. A pro will deal with this in good humor and in their stride and get all the shots needed quickly so everyone can get back to the fun. An amateur will take longer and will lack the experience of getting people into position to get the shot done quickly.

After the family photos usually the couple will get some portraits done alone. Again a professional photographer will have picked a nice spot and will get the shots done quickly and get the couple back to the party.

Later in the evening when the dancing starts most amateur equipment can't handle dark rooms with flashing lights and guests dancing. We have all seen the blurry, grainy images on social media. This is the most challenging part of the day from a photography point of view and only the best equipment will produce a satisfactory result. 

After the wedding the friend may give you the cards out of the camera or download them for you and send them to you. A professional will curate the images to select the best ones and then individually edit the ones chosen to bring out the best in them. This is the most time consuming part of photographing a wedding and producing a professional looking result.

If you understand the above and appreciate a friend is unlikely to produce the quality a professional will and are happy with that then go for it.

Option 2: Hiring a Professional Wedding Photographer

Why Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer?Not Everything Might Go To Plan On Your Wedding Day but You Might Get a Great Photo From It With a Professional Photographer on Your Side

Not everything might go to plan on your wedding day but if you decide to hire a professional wedding photographer you should be guaranteed picking someone with great experience, great testimonials and a large portfolio of previous work to give you comfort in your choice. It is hard to hide on the internet these days so if you do a little research you can weed out the cowboys.

6 Steps to Picking a Great Wedding Photographer

Step 1: Shortlist 5 photographers that you have seen and like their work

Step 2: Email them and check availability on your date (Tip: If someone takes forever to reply to an email beware as you don't want the stress that can produce close to a wedding)

Step 3: Check Independent Testimonials: All photographers will put great testimonials on their own website. Check testimonials on their Google My Business page, Facebook Page, Weddingsonline.ie etc These will give you a more complete picture of who you are dealing with

Step 4: Get a detailed package and price list. Understand exactly what you are paying for. Some photographers bundle everything into a package (Eg 2 photographers, a main album for the couple, parents albums etc) Some offer the photography as a stand alone and you can add on the extras. Don't pay for anything you don't want just because it is part of the package. Ask if it can be reduced if you don't need everything offered.

Step 5: View several full wedding galleries they have done. If you are considering a package that will produce 300 images then ask to see a gallery from a similar wedding with 300 images. Don't accept a highlights gallery of 50 or 60.

Step 6: Have a chat. The couple will spend  a lot of time with the photographer on the day. Make sure you get on. This will give you confidence and help you relax on the day which in turn helps the photographer get the best shots. If you are happy with all the above then you are probably ready to hire your photographer

Always Make Sure When Hiring a Wedding Photographer

1. Get everything agreed in writing. A professional will insist on it anyway
2. Understand what you are paying for. This should always be in the contract or booking form
3. Understand what happens if something goes wrong. EG is the deposit refundable or can it be transferred to a new date
4. Great Independent Testimonials. (Hint: On my own website I can write whatever i want)
5. Good communication from the photographer. Personally I think 24 hours to answer an email is plenty and can often be a lot less. Silences can cause stress to couples which can be easily avoided
 

Things to avoid in Hiring A Wedding Photographer

1. Anyone who guarantees a turnaround within a few days. Individually editing hundreds of images can be done in a couple of days but it is not advised.
2. Anyone who does not offer post production on the images.
3. Anyone who tries to find out the size of your wedding or budget before giving you a price. If you want a photographer from prep until the 1st dance it makes little difference to the photographer if there is 25 guests or 250 guests
4. Vague testimonials. We have all seen them on websites of all kinds
5. Only being shown highlights galleries
6. When a contract/booking form with terms and conditions attached is not offered

So Why Can Hiring a Professional Wedding Photographer Be So Expensive

Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer and Get Amazing ImagesAn Investment for Yourself and Future Generations

So bringing it back to the cost of all this. I am going to ignore all the items usually trotted out such as equipment, insurance, fuel etc and base it on the number of hours put into a wedding.

A professional wedding photographer will spend at least a couple of hours dealing with the couple before the day including emails, meetings, sending contracts and showing previous work etc. On the day there is usually an hours traveling time each way to and from the wedding. For a full day prep could start at 10:30am and the first dance can easily start at 10:00pm with the photographer leaving at 10:30pm. So this is 16 hours work in total which is what most people think the wedding photographer does for their money. I wish :) 

After the day the photographer will upload and back up all the images. Then the fun begins. Typically a full day wedding will produce between 1600 - 2000 images. The first job is to bring that number down to what amount you said you would deliver. For me that is normally around 350 450. This takes approximately 2-3 hours. Then each of the 350-450 images needs to be edited individually. No matter what presets a photographer uses an image will always look better going in and individually editing it. Even if each image takes 2 minutes to edit that is another almost 12 hours work. So in total for a full day wedding a photographer will put in approximately 30 hours work. So if you divide the price of your package (After you take out albums/USB Boxes etc) and divide it by 30 you will see why wedding photography can be expensive

So with all that in mind why do some photographers charge €400 and some €4000. Well let's start with the €400. It can be an option. Most photographers were there at the start of their career. I certainly was. I was a professional photographer that worked for magazines and newspapers and corporate clients but had never done weddings and at the time I advertised a package outlining I had no wedding photography experience but showed the quality of other work I had done. I got a few bookings from couples that weren't going to have a photographer but took a chance. They got a budget package and I got the start of a wedding portfolio. So don't rule it out but understand there is a risk involved.

Next you have the majority of  Wedding Photographers that charge between €1100 and €1700 for a full day from prep until the first few dances. The difference can be in the level of experience they have. How much they are in demand and is there any extras included in the package such as a luxury wooden box for the USB key or a significant amount more images delivered etc

Then there is the a the group that charge over €2000. These can vary from a photographer that has a day job and wants to limit the amount of weddings they shoot during the year as it is a supplement to a full time job. Simple law of economics, price goes up and demand goes down and they are happy to hold out for the couples that really love their work and are happy to pay a premium for it.

In this group there are also photographers that are in very high demand with decades of experience and have worked their price up to this point and know the amount of weddings they want to shoot in a year and have delivered quality work to couples for that time and new couples are happy and confident in the service and quality they will get. In this group you will also usually find it will include a second shooter, albums and prints of some sort.

Dublin City Hall Wedding Photographer

City Hall in Dublin was built between 1769 and 1779. Originally used by the merchants of the city, it is now the home of
Dublin City Council. However it is available for hire and is very popular for couples to get married in.
They have Civil and Secular ceremonies there. Laura and Jack had decided to have it as their wedding ceremony venue
as they loved the building. Situated in the heart of Dublin City it is a great wedding ceremony venue.
After the ceremony couples often have their drinks reception there in the east wing. While the west wing is a fabulous
location for family and group photos. The venue looks amazing as a backdrop for photos.
Most hotels in Dublin City Centre have a limited amount of space for photos so this is a great choice. 

After the ceremony couples often (Weather and comfortable shoes dependent) take a stroll through the streets
of Dublin to their reception venue. This day was just before Christmas and was raining on and off so
we jumped in the car and headed to the Westin Hotel just a few minutes away for the rest of their celebrations.

Weddingsonline.ie has announced the findings of their latest Irish wedding survey. 1200 people participated in January 2023.

For the first time, the majority of of Irish wedding ceremonies are non-religious! Only 43% of couples chose a religious ceremony (down from 55% in 2022) with civil ceremonies and humanist ceremonies gaining popularity.

The Main Findings From the Survey About the Current Attitudes Towards Weddings in Ireland are:

• The average budget for a wedding is €29,550 (not including honeymoon).
• Friday and Saturday are still the most popular days for weddings (68%), with midweek (28%) and Sunday (4%) weddings becoming more popular.
• The busiest month for weddings is June (13%), followed by August (12%) and May and July (both 11%), with 44% of our participants getting married in 2023 and 32% getting married in 2024.
• 43% of ceremonies are religious (down from 55% in 2022), 23% are civil and 18% are humanist.
• 6% of weddings have fewer than 50 guests, 39% have more than 150 guests, with the average number of guests being 142.
• 27% of couples had their parents help pay for their wedding and 31% got a loan.
• 56% of couples surveyed went over budget with 30% spending over to 5K more than they had intended to.
• The average age for couples tying the knot is 34 for men and 32 for women.
• The hotel venue remains the most popular choice at 57%, followed by the country house at 21% and then castles at 14%.
• The Top 5 wedding counties are Meath, Cork, Cavan, Kildare and Dublin.
• Average cost spent on photography is €1856
• The decided factor for which suppliers to book was reviews and recommendations (56%), favourite choice (34%), with only 10% stating that price was their deciding factor.

Average Cost of a Wedding Photographer in Ireland is €1856

As you can see from the above the average spend on a wedding photographer is €1856. This can range from having a photographer for the ceremony and a few photos after to having two photographers for a full day with a full size wedding album, 2 smaller parents album, USB Key in a bespoke wooden box with prints etc.

The core of any wedding photography package is the digital files that the photographer takes on the day and subsequently culls and edits to produce a final gallery. Everything else can be added on at the time or later. When you are looking for a photographer for your wedding there are 2 important things to look for. The first is Style and the second is Experience

A Wedding Photographer's Style

Simply if you like a photographer's style you are on the right road. There is no point in hiring someone who is highly recommended and has won every award in the book but you are looking at the portfolio and it does not connect with you. Don't worry about making the wrong decision because everyone else thinks the particular photographer is fantastic. It's your wedding you are not making the wrong decision. Walk away.

Personally I work in mostly Documentary style. I only really set up the family and couple photos and discuss with the couple what they want before the day. This is not for everyone. So if you want big staged shots that take set up and lights and lots of direction then I'm not your guy and I will tell you as much. If you want all the important parts of your day captured without having to pose and perform for the camera and all the candid moments you didn't have a chance to see then I am!

The photo at the top of this Blog Post is an example. It happened by complete accident. We took a walk around Grafton St in Dublin after the ceremony to get some photos. On a side street there was a delivery van delivering the sofa to Pygmalion. I quickly asked the lads could I use it for a minute. Nobody wants to upset a bride on their wedding day. I got them to put it in the middle of the street and took a few shots and we were "Gone in 60 seconds"
 

A Wedding Photographer's Experience

Secondly a Wedding Photographer's Experience is what allows them to produce consistent results every time. I'm going to regret saying this but if a problem happens at a wedding that interferes with me getting a shot I have seen it a dozen times. The Auntie deciding to stand in the aisle with her iPad as the bride arrives in, the Uncle that's an amateur photographer directing everyone where to stand in the group photos after the ceremony and so on. An experienced photographer will see this happening, step in and deal with it politely, firmly and quickly to resolve the situation.

Weddings also happen in such a variety of venues that provide lots of challenges for a photographer in terms of logistics and lighting. We have all seen blurry smart phone images from the night before that don't inspire. Again an experienced photographer will have dealt with the venue or similar situation before and not panic or be frustrated by it and still get the best possible shots.

Experience is also incredibly important in the post production of the images. As I said above weddings are in a variety of venues with various lighting conditions. An experienced photographer will be able to bring all these different images and situations and give them a consistent look and feel.

Conclusion on Picking a  Wedding Photographer

After you have considered a photographer's style and experience then worry about the price. If the price is more than you budgeted for then see if you can get the digital package first and then add on all the extras if you want them after the wedding. You won't regret it as you will get years of enjoyment from the photographs and future generations will get to cherish them as well. I hope this helps in picking your wedding photographer

Tarah and Dave's Wedding Fallon and Byrne, Dublin City

Tarah and Dave got married at the end of the summer in Fallon and Byrne in Dublin City. Like most weddings in the second half of the year it was starting to resemble pre covid weddings. No restrictions, family and friends relaxing and enjoying the day. Tarah and Dave didn't want to spend lots of time on the day posing for photos as they wanted to spend time with friends and family so it was a very relaxed affair and the dreaded photographer stayed in the background for most of the day.

Tarah was getting ready with her mum and bridesmaids in the Westbury Hotel. The ceremony itself was in the Fallon and Byrne on Exchequer St in Dublin. Marie Barden from Spiritual Ceremonies conducted the ceremony brilliantly for the couple. Tarah's dad and step dad walked her up the aisle to meet Dave. 
After the ceremony we took a short walk to the upstairs of the Stag's Head in Dame Lane for the drinks reception where Tarah and Dave's dog minders brought in their two dogs for a quick photoshoot before bringing them back home. After the drinks reception it was back to Fallon and Byrne for dinner.

Julia and Yuhki's Wedding Dublin Registry Office

Well 2022 is off and running. Julia and Yuhki got married earlier this year in the Registry Office in Dublin City. It was a small intimate affair as some of Yuhki's family were not able to travel due to restrictions but nevertheless they wanted to go ahead. Julia's mum had contacted me to see if I was available to photograph their wedding and I was delighted that I was available. You couldn't have met a sweeter couple.

The ceremony itself was in the Registry office beside Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital. The HSE staff are always very friendly and professional. Nothing ever runs late so you have to be on the ball. The ceremony included some readings by Julia's dad and Yuhki's sister which were really personal. After the ceremony we had decided to have a short walk around that part of Dublin to get a few nice shots. So first we headed for Merrion Square. We had gotten a permit from Dublin City Council. It was a cold day but everyone was up for having a bit of fun. Julia's mum had the camera in hand so I had a bit of competition. So we took a stroll and ended up in Toner's of Baggot St. My arm did not need to be twisted. So we finished off having a chat and a pint in their heated beer garden. What a nice way to start off 2022.

Annette and Jamal's Wedding Clonabreany House, Co. Meath

Sometime in late 2020 I was out for a rare celebration of a friend's birthday and Sinead one of the people at the table who I had only met once or twice before was saying how her sister Annette was getting married but was having trouble finding suppliers in particular a photographer. I always knew going to the pub was a good idea. I gave Sinead my details and she passed it on to Annette who contacted me a couple of days later.

Annette and Jamal live out of the country so we arranged a zoom call to go over their plans for their wedding in Clonabreany House, Co. Meath. A wonderful wedding venue. The main concern was the ceremony was late in the afternoon and there would be only a small amount of time for photos outdoors if the weather was good. Clonabreany has great spots outside in the grounds as well as some lovely rooms in the main house if needed.

On the day Annette was getting ready in a cottage on the grounds with her mum and bridesmaids before final prep up in the main house. The very talented Anthony Kane was the videographer for the day and was great to catch up with him. Jamal was getting ready in one of the apartments across the road from the main house. Mild panic in the morning as the grooms men's bow ties had gone missing. Magically replacements were found, still not quite sure how.

So onto the ceremony and another familiar face with Graham Barrett being the celebrant. Always a pleasure to see him as he gets a great reaction from the couple and the crowd. After the ceremony Annette braved the cold and we got some nice shots in the grounds before dinner. Then more uncertainty hit when the band booked had to cancel as some of the members had tested positive for covid. Fortunately through the wedding band network a replacement band turned up and rocked the house for the rest of the night.

Karl and Samantha's Wedding Morrison Hotel, Dublin City

Karl and Samantha were a fantastic couple. Karl contacted me earlier in the year to enquire about photographing his wedding. At the time restrictions were changing so it must have been a stressful time for them but they were going ahead with their wedding in the Morrison Hotel in Dublin City Centre. The Morrison is a popular choice for couples getting married in the city. Sometimes they have the ceremony in the Hotel or it is a short walk to other venues like City Hall. Karl and Samantha were having their ceremony in the hotel it self presided by Janet Stokes

Karl and Samantha were both getting ready in the hotel with their family and bridal party so it was a busy morning. Lots of activity and a chance to get to know everyone before the ceremony. Karl and Samantha are the most down to earth couple so there were only a tiny amount of nerves and you can see they both enjoyed the ceremony. After the ceremony Karl suggested going across the ha'penny bridge to one of the pubs for a quick pint. My arm did not need to be twisted so we rambled into the Ha'Penny Bridge Inn where the couple were greeted with cheers and everyone offering them a seat and to buy them a drink.

Back out in the cold and back to the hotel where Trevor from Midlands DJ had set up some music and the guests were enjoying the drinks reception including a contingent that had made its way over from Scotland. After dinner Trevor got Karl and Samantha and all the guests onto the dancefloor and kept the party going for the rest of the evening.

Jackie and Mick's Wedding Clanard Court Athy Co. Kildare

Jackie and Mick were a fantastic couple. They were one of the many couples that had planned their wedding in 2020 but had to postpone due to Covid. They took it in their stride. From the first time Jackie contacted me I knew I was really going to enjoy shooting their wedding. They rescheduled for the summer of 2021 and as the restrictions were being lifted they were allowed to have the number of guest they wanted.

Jackie got ready at home before travelling to the Clanard Court Hotel in Athy, Co. Kildare where Mick was waiting for her. Jackie had gotten Mick the loan of a 1980's Ford Cosworth to travel down in. He was a very happy man.

I was very pleasantly surprised that they had also booked the fabulous wedding singer Della Mannion for the ceremony and the ceremony was being conducted by the ever professional Dave Russell.

After the ceremony we went out the garden in the Clanard Court to do some family photos as well as some shots of Jackie and Mick. The weather was threatening to rain but thankfully it held off. After that it was back to the drinks reception so they could relax with their friends and families

Hannah and Karl's Wedding Featured in RSVP Magazine

Remember earlier in the year we had our 2k, 5k limit etc. One of the only reasons you could leave the county was to attend a wedding. Weddings at the time were only allowed 6 guests. Hannah and Karl were one of the few brave couples who had decided not to postpone their wedding and were going ahead regardless. I was lucky enough to be asked to be their photographer for the day. The bonus being it was in Langton's in Kilkenny. A great venue for a wedding.

At the time personal services such as hair and make up were not allowed. This would stress a lot of people out but not Hannah. Cool as a cucumber herself and her bridesmaid Claire were getting ready in Langton's. The ceremony was taking place in The Set Theatre which is also part of Langton's. Willie Collins was as great as ever administering the ceremony. The man doesn't know the meaning of stress.

After the ceremony it was everyone and me out for a walk around Kilkenny City. The weather was glorious and we stopped at a few different spots for some photos. Everyone stopping to congratulate Hannah and Karl. Then back to Langton's for dinner.

Dublin City Hall Wedding Wedding Reception The Castleknock Hotel

Having lived in Dublin all my life you think you know the place but as we all know there are building we walk by everyday and barely notice them. Up until a few years ago Dublin's City Hall on Dame St was one of these when I was lucky enough to be asked to photograph a graduation ceremony there. After that I always thought it would be a great place for a wedding ceremony.

Over the past few years I have shot many weddings there but there was one this summer that was extra special. Back in 2019 I ran a competition for one couple to win a free wedding photography package. Enter Jacqueline and Sean! Jacqueline entered and won the free wedding photography package. Original wedding date November 2020. Rescheduled to November 2021 due to Covid and then brought forward to July 2021. Everyone was a little nervous as restrictions were changing all the time.

The day started at Jacqueline's parent's house where everyone was getting ready. Usual busy scene with last minute finishing touches. Mandy the maid of honour was on the ball sorting everything and everyone out to leave on time for City Hall.

At City Hall Sean was waiting. No first look. Jacqueline had decided on a traditional entrance with her father. You could see how emotional it was for him when he saw her. The ceremony was conduction by a registrar from the HSE. Afterward there were congratulations all round before doing some family shots in City Hall.

After that it was off to The Iveagh Gardens for some photos Jacqueline and Sean. Jacqueline's Dad knows the staff at Iveagh Gardens so we arrived and were treated like royalty. Then after that it was off to the Castleknock Hotel for the Reception. This was one of the first weddings in a long time that the couple were having a first dance and were then joined by their kids.

I love every wedding I get to photograph, but sometimes ones come along that are extra special. In the times we were living through then it was great to see such a down to earth family enjoying their wedding day. Nothing phased them and that calm spread throughout the day. Clontarf Castle Wedding Dee & Pauric 
Looking Back to Look Forward

I wanted to revisit some weddings that happened pre-covid to remind ourselves what times were like back then and what life will hopefully be like again quite soon. This was a wedding that I shot in Clontarf Castle in Dublin in late February 2020 and was a typical Irish wedding.  Looking through the images now it is amazing to see everyone together enjoying the day. No social distancing, no masks, no hand sanitiser and large HSE yellow signs informing us how to keep safe in a pandemic. How lucky we all were and probably didn't realise it.

Another strange thing was I was on holiday in San Francicso in January when I got an email from Dee. Remember foreign holidays!! The amazing Wedding Singer Laura O'Neill  gave Dee my details as she was looking for a photographer for her wedding in February. As I was away and with the time difference and patchy wifi it was a challenge to arrange all the details but we got there.

The couple had to change their plans at the last minute and were having their wedding ceremony in Clontarf Castle with the Everyday Priestess Rev Medbh Boyle conducting the ceremony. It was originally meant to be in a local church but it had to be changed the week before the wedding. Their theme was black & white. Despite all the changes everything went off without a hitch and was a fabulous day. You can see the full article on weddingsonlie.ie here

Looking back on this now and knowing the vaccination programme is powering ahead (I'm getting my second jab on Friday) and restrictions are lifting. 50 guests will be allowed in July and hopefully 100 guests will be allowed in August normal might be returning and weddings like Dee and Pauric's will be on the way back. We are still waiting for the restrictions to be lifted on live music at weddings but there is a lot of pressure coming to argue for musicians to be allowed work once more. There seems to be little logic in allowing 100 people at a wedding and indoor dining and not having live music. I can feel a huge sigh of relief coming on from couples, venues and suppliers.

Hi everyone, soon weddings will start happening again and couples who have been in a very stressful situation should be able plan their special day. The registry office will be back open and will be conducting weddings. Over the years I have shot many weddings there and it is always a great occasion. The staff are so professional and happy to deal with everyone. They understand it is your special day and treat it that way.  

The Couples that get married in the registry office are as diverse as our population. It is a favourite with same sex couples and sometimes older couples that have been together a long time and now taking the plunge. All couples should have their wedding day captured and I hope I can help with that.

Below I have put together a wedding photography package for weddings in the Dublin Registry Office and small Civil Ceremonies in Dublin as well. Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping well and safe at the moment. Challenging and stressful times especially for couples who planned to get married this summer. While many have rescheduled some have decided to go ahead on the original date with a micro wedding and possibly having another larger celebration when it is safe to do so.

From the information the government has put out small weddings will be allowed to go ahead from July 20th with social distancing in Ireland. This is great news for couples that have been waiting to find out if they can go ahead with their wedding. While lots of couples have postponed to the end of 2020 or early 2021 there are still many who want to go ahead and get married on their original date regardless of the restrictions and then possibly having the big day in a years times with another ceremony and celebration. If you are in this situation and are worried that you will not be able to have it captured then I hope I can help.

Below I have put together a wedding photography package for micro weddings during the covid 19 pandemic. It is specifically for weddings of less than 20 people to cover the bride and groom, the celebrant, 2 witnesses and parents and grandparents of  the couple. All weddings are special and some come along that you just smile all day even though you are meant to be working. Don't tell anyone :) Jacinta & Lorna's wedding was one of those days. The plan was to have the ceremony outdoors but even though it was in September the rain poured down. There were breaks in it but not enough for everyone to feel safe sitting outside. Kippure were brilliant and had Plan B put in place as soon as Jacinta and Lorna decided to have the ceremony indoors.

Rescheduling Your Wedding Due to Covid 19Sometimes things don't go to plan

Hi

I hope you are all keeping well and safe at the moment. All our lives have been turned upside down and planning a wedding at the best of times can be stressful without the added uncertainty of Covid 19.

If you are in the unfortunate position of having to reschedule your wedding due to the outbreak of Covid 19 I hope the below will point you in the right direction of making the rescheduling a little less stressful. All advice is purely my own opinion from my own life and conversations with couples and other suppliers over the last few weeks. I've divided it up into a few sections and probably won't cover everything. 

Do You Have To Reschedule Your Wedding?

As of April 6th the country is as close to lockdown with restrictions on a lot of movement. My guess would be when the restrictions are lifted they will be done gradually and possibly the last item to be lifted will be the pubs and large gatherings. So if your wedding is in April or May then I would bite the bullet and reschedule. Even if it is allowed to go ahead everyone will be on edge and guests may not want to attend particularly anyone that has elderly relatives.

If your wedding is in June then I would wait until the next review of the restrictions by government which will most likely be the end of this week. If the restrictions stay the same or increased I would look at rescheduling a June wedding.If you are a July wedding I would wait for another couple of weeks. If you do have to reschedule I would suggest having a winter wedding or planning for the first half of next year. If you postpone for a few weeks you don't want to have to postpone again.

If You Do Have To/Want To Reschedule Your Wedding

So you've bitten the bullet and decided to reschedule. Before you do anything read the contract with your venue and other suppliers and talk to them about your concerns. They are probably expecting the call so don't worry about that bit. Ask your venue about what is involved. Will they give you a similar new date. EG if you had a Saturday will they give you another Saturday. If it's not available what are your options. Can you change venue and get your deposit back if a suitable date is not available. If you move to a weekday is the price lower? Is there a choice of dates?

When you have a possible new date then get in touch with your other suppliers and see if they are available for the possible new date. They will want to fulfill it but depending on the supplier they may not be available. A supplier for your cake can service several weddings in one day so might not be an issue but for the band or the photographer they can only be in one place at a time so if they already have a booking there may be an issue. An experienced supplier should be able to put you in touch with possible alternatives for you to choose from. Deposits are normally not refundable but most suppliers will transfer them to a new date. Any money paid over and above the deposit should be refundable but please check your contract with your suppliers

If you have bought accessories for your original wedding date with the date written on the items why not still use them. Make a thing of it. No need to spend the money twice. There will be extra cost in changing so may as well save a little bit

Let Your Guests Know

As soon as you have decided to reschedule let your guests know as soon as possible. Flights and hotels may be booked. Most accommodation can be refunded and if the airline cancels their flight then they would be entitled to a refund. There may also be guests just about to book so you may be able to save them the expense.

On The New Wedding Day

The new wedding day will be different from what you originally planned. Some guests might not be able to make the new day. The band/Photographer you had your heart set on might be different. Try not to let that worry you. Focus on your day and your partner. It is your day and everyone there is there for you and to make your day as good as it possibly can.

The Bigger Picture

It is terrible that you are in the position that you have to postpone your wedding and all the stress and possible cost involved. However, you will still get married and all the current restrictions are to keep us all safe. Just as an example I was meant to be in Spain this week and if the restrictions were not in place I would have considered going which would have been a terrible idea. The restrictions are to keep us all safe. If we don't catch the virus then we won't spread the virus. So weddings is the most important day in someones life but at the moment we need to look after each other. The wedding day will happen and hopefully all this will be a bad memory.

The Contemporary Digital Wedding Photography Package is a very popular package. It is especially popular for couples with large bridal parties as it captures all the preparation in the morning before the ceremony. It is fantastic to see all the bridesmaids looking after every detail to make everything perfect for the bride to be. This can be a nervous time for any bride and to have her friends and family around her as she is getting ready can be a great source of comfort.

Most people are also not used to having a photographer following them around all day and the preparation time can settle any nerves with the camera. I usually say as soon as I arrive in the morning to everyone "please ignore me and pretend I am not here". Often brides think they have to pose or act in front of the camera and the exact opposite is what I try to achieve. Natural relaxed images of the bride with her friends and family can create precious and real memories. Nobody wants to remember feeling awkward as the photographer had a great idea for a great shot! My job as a wedding photographer is to capture your wedding day, not to create it.

Last month I was asked to go up to Lucan Boxing Club to photograph some of John Joyce's last training camp before his fight in Boston on  March 16th the day before St. Patrick's day. Not only was John there with his team but local teenagers where there training as well.

A new year rolls around and a lot of couples planning their wedding. Possibly after getting engaged at Christmas or on Valentine's Day. After setting a date the scramble is on to arrange everything else for their upcoming wedding. My advice is always plane your wedding well in advance. This gives you the best pick of suppliers and you can make decisions with a calm head.

So what should be first on your wedding checklist. I would suggest get the wedding venue sorted. This gives you a fixed time and place to arrange everything else. No point in arranging something hair, make-up, flowers, bands, photographer, videographer from suppliers in Donegal and then pick a venue in Kerry.

After that I would suggest the wedding band and/or DJ, your wedding photographer and videographer if you decide to have one. The more in advance you book your suppliers the better choice you will have. 

So if you are picking a wedding photographer in Dublin or anywhere Ireland you have a great selection to choose from. All unique with different styles and for different budgets. So you have an event or wedding in Dublin and need a photographer. What do you do? Google and hope for the best. Well here are my 5 top tips for what to do when looking for a professional wedding or event photographer in Dublin. If you have time after reading below please visit my Wedding Photography Page or my Event Photography Page for even more information

Tip Number One - How To Research The Best Photographer For Your Event in Dublin

So if you have never hired a professional photographer before then the easiest option is to use Google. Now the question is what should you Google. If you search for a photographer then the number of results will be mind boggling. Try to define your event. For example if it is a Wedding and you live in Dublin then try goggling "Wedding Photographer Dublin". If your event is a corporate event then try searching for "Corporate Event Photographer Dublin". You will still have loads of professional photographers in Dublin to choose from but at least you have narrowed the search. 

Tip Number Two - Does The Photographer's Previous Work Meet Your Expectations

Now you have narrowed your list of professional photographers in Dublin to a manageable few. Next thing to do is to check out their website. "What am I looking for?" I hear you ask. Well, look at their previous work at similar events to your own. Consider if the photographs produced are similar to what you require. If you need social shots of the attendees enjoying themselves at your event then you don't need a photographer that only does landscapes. Also check if the website is updated regularly. This shows they are active, in demand and take pride in their work. A website that is updated often will also give you an idea of the consistency of a photographer's work. You can also look at images the photographer has produced that may be on different subjects than you require. This will give you a sense of how adaptable the photographer can be in different situations. At this stage you should pick two or three photographers that you like so you can make contact with them.

Tip Number Three - Make Contact With The Potential Photographers

Now you have a very short list of potential photographers for your event and it is time to make contact with them. Whatever your preference may be, contact the photographer by email or phone to discuss your requirements. Personally I prefer the phone as you should immediately see if you have a rapport with your potential photographer. Each wedding or event is different but the first question to ask is whether or not the photographer is available on the date you require. If the photographer is available then other good questions to ask include. How much will hiring a professional photographer cost? What is included in the price quoted? If you require physical prints of the photographs how much extra would this be? What can the images be used for?  How quick will the images be turned around? Even if your wedding or event is in Dublin confirm if traveling expenses are extra or included.

Tip Number Four - Make A Decision And Pick Your Photographer

After you have been in touch with the potential photographers you can now decide who to pick. Price is always a good place to start. If you are happy with the quality of each potential photographer's work and they all fit your requirements then the cheapest quote is always very tempting. However before diving in consider whether a more expensive quote is giving you something extra and does it represent value for money. Also consider how the photographer considered your requirements and how adaptable they were to meeting them. Good communication between a photographer and their client is essential to produce the images you need. It can be better to pay a little extra if you feel you have a rapport with the photographer you are hiring. If you are choosing a photographer for your wedding then consider you will have several meetings with them over a period of months to get all the details correct so dealing with somebody you feel comfortable with and have confidence with is essential.

Tip Number Five - Put It In Writing

To avoid misunderstandings with what is required it is always best to put your expectations in writing and ask the potential photographer to confirm they understand what is expected. It doesn't need to be drawn up by a team of lawyers or anything like that. A simple email can do. If the event has a larger budget such as a wedding a contract may be advisable. The photographer may be able to provide this. If they do then read it carefully and get advice if you feel you need it. Hopefully after all your careful research and discussion it will not be needed, but just in case there is a misunderstanding then you can refer to it. If you are not dealing with the photographer directly on the day of your wedding or event then forward the requirements to the person that will be and let the photographer know who the point of contact is.

In November last year I was lucky enough to be able to visit Memphis and Graceland to experience this corner of Rock and Roll history. It is amazing to see even 40 years after Elvis died that people from all over the world come to visit his "gaff" (Irish translation for "house"). Although he was born in Tupelo Elvis moved to Memphis when he was thirteen that is where he called home for the rest of his life. Memphians are very proud of their famous son and the fact he stayed in Memphis and didn't move to the Hollywood Hills or some other celebrity hang out. 

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of his passing I am presenting a limited edition of the below photograph depicting Elvis' fans graffiti at the gates of his home Graceland in Memphis. After a ten-hour train ride from New Orleans the first stop was the hotel to drop the bags and figure out a plan. The hotel had a free shuttle bus into the centre of the city. Well when I say free the driver hustled me out of 5 Euro but that's another story. Beale Street was the first stop. The police had barriers on all the roads to allow everyone to walk on the street.

The city is proud of its musical heritage. Streets have been renamed after Elvis & BB King. Everywhere you go you are reminded of their musical history. Even stepping out of the elevator in the Carlton hotel we were greeted with a six-foot picture of Elvis in the seventies. Everywhere on Beale St. was either a music venue or a souvenir shop. You could feel the music in the city. In New Orleans sometimes you felt the music on Bourbon Street was sometimes just for the tourists. In Memphis it felt like the musicians were playing for themselves and we were allowed join in the party.

As it was the first night in town a lot of it was spent bar hopping trying to find the best places. They were all as good as each other it just depended on the type of music you wanted to listen to. Honky Tonk, Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Funk and even 2 guys doing a piano duel for tips from the audience. They would only play a request if it was written on a 5 dollar bill.

The below photograph was taken at the famous gates of Graceland where we decided to go the next morning. For as long as Elvis lived at Graceland there has been a tradition of writing messages on the outside wall. You could spend many hours just reading the messages from fans from all over the world who have made the journey. It is fascinating to see the amount of different places people have come from. Even if you're not a fan you would feel the love people have for Elvis even now almost 40 years after he passed.

The main man was playing to the crowd and encouraging people to get up and dance and so they did. Young or old it didn't really matter. Nobody seemed to have any inhibitions about getting up and shaking their stuff in front of the crowd.

The below photograph was taken late in the evening, well after midnight. The crowd was thinning out, the night was getting a bit cooler and the dancers a little bit more inebriated. The girl on the floor didn't care. She was going to enjoy herself. The girl at the table looking on looks a little envious maybe wishing she had the same confidence to just get up and dance. No judgement, I wasn't dancing either!

The blue tint is a nod to Lloyd Russell Sherman. His photograph of Elvis Presley in 1956 was used on the cover of a compilation of blues songs recorded by Elvis called "Reconsider Baby".  Check it out. As we were heading to Memphis next (The home of the blues and Elvis) it seemed appropriate

After a few days visiting friends in Mobile and before heading to Memphis we stopped a few days in New Orleans. It was Halloween and from all accounts New Orleans is a party town at the best of times but Mardi Gras and Halloween are extra crazy. It didn't disappoint. All day every day the streets were filled with people in Halloween costumes. Everything from Jesus to Darth Vader. It was a place where anything could happen and it did.

You can see the city is still suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Lots of poverty and depravation can be seen once you are outside the French Quarter. You wouldn't blame the locals if they decided to leave their city for somewhere new as their government seems to have neglected them but they have a fighting spirit and are proud of their heritage. A big part of this is the music that echoes through the streets day and night.  

The below photo was taken on the way back to the hotel one night when these musicians just pitched up on Bourbon Street, put a cardboard box in front of them for tips and started playing the most amazing Dixieland Jazz. There was no Galway Girl or Sweet Home Alabama here. You could see this was the music they were brought up on and they were now carrying the torch for the next generation. To these guys it was probably just another night but for the onlookers it was a piece of New Orleans magic they had come to see. Unforgettable!
